Union Leadership

SEIU ULTCW President Laphonza Butler (click image for larger version)

Laphonza Butler is the President of SEIU ULTCW – the United Long Term Care Workers’ Union, which represents 180,000 in-home caregivers and nursing home workers across California.

Laphonza’s passion for advocating and leading on behalf of workers and those they serve is grounded in her own personal journey. Growing up in a household where her Mom worked multiple low wage jobs in order to provide for her three children, Laphonza experienced first-hand the challenges faced by working families who did not have a voice on the job or the power of a union to improve their conditions. Early on, Laphonza sought a path that would ensure she contributed to bringing back the values of dignity and respect for workers and to be an architect of the changes needed to promote social and economic justice for all.

Over the years, Laphonza has served in numerous leadership roles on behalf of working people through which thousands of healthcare workers at John’s Hopkins Hospital in Maryland were organized, tens of thousands of security officers and janitors at multi-national corporations won a voice on the job along with collective bargaining agreements, and more than 25,000 foodservice workers united to be silent no more.

As President of SEIU ULTCW, Laphonza’s leadership has empowered its members to lead and build a powerful, transformational worker organization that has celebrated historic victories. Such victories include the passage of the Coordinated Care Initiative in July 2012 that will transform California’s home care program to better serve caregivers and recipients for years to come, a collective bargaining agreement resulting in over 130,000 Los Angeles County home care workers receiving an hourly living wage of $9.65, new contracts that have raised standards for thousands of home care and nursing home workers throughout California, and the continued protection of the state’s In-Home Supportive Services program from devastating budget cuts.

A proud native of the south, Laphonza is a graduate of Jackson State University, in Jackson, MS. In addition to serving as the President of SEIU ULTCW and is also a Vice President of the SEIU International Executive Board.

Kim Evon is the Secretary Treasurer of SEIU ULTCW.

Kim got her start in the labor movement just like many of us.  In 1992 Kim was a unit secretary at Rhode Island Hospital where she helped successfully organize her co-workers to improve working conditions.  That campaign changed her life as she realized that her true calling was to work in the labor movement and help others achieve their voice in the workplace.

Since then, Kim has held a variety of roles in SEIU.  Such roles have included Deputy Director of the Public Division for International, Internal and External Organizing for a local in Cape Cod, California Area Director, and an Education Coordinator.

In 2009 Kim came to ULTCW as a deputy trustee and was asked to stay on to serve as Chief of Staff.  Earlier this year Kim was elected to serve as ULTCW’s Secretary Treasurer.
