One Family’s Story- A Nation’s Fight for Immigration Reform

One Family’s Story: A Nation’s Fight for Immigration Reform shares the emotional story of a loving family facing an uncertain future after a law-abiding husband and father of two was rounded up in a raid and placed on a schedule for deportation that would tear him from the most important people in his life, and force him to leave the only place he calls home.

Congress Members Gary Miller and Paul Cook are but two examples of Representatives who have sat on their hands when urgent action is required.  Please join us in calling upon these and other elected officials to stand up for what’s right.  Passing immigration reform must be placed on the top of Congress’ 2014 to do list.

Help ensure that aspiring Americans are no longer torn apart form their families.  Please view and share this video (via email, Facebook and Twitter) and take a moment to contact:

Congressman Miller at 909-980-1492
Congressman Cook at 760-247-1815.

SEIU ULTCW joins countless advocates for commonsense immigration reform in raising awareness of the thousands who will be separated from their parents, spouses and other loved ones because of our broken immigration system.

The policies in place are not only tearing families apart, but harm all workers, documented, undocumented, and citizen, alike.  Overhauling the broken immigration system would grow our economy, and improve wages.  But it would also affirm our core convictions and most important values.  We all deserve access to a path to dignity.

Join the 24-Hour Hunger Strike for Immigration Reform!

This past week former SEIU Secretary Treasurer, Eliseo Medina, and other faith, civil rights, immigrant and labor leaders began a hunger strike. They’re fasting (only consuming water) as a personal commitment, and as a way to reach the hearts of members of Congress and push them to pass immigration reform.

We are asking that you join in solidarity with their very valiant efforts and commit to a 24-hour hunger strike from 5 pm on Tuesday, November 19th, to 5 pm on Wednesday, November 20th.

Through this hunger strike, you can talk to your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors about the need to pass comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for all. Too many families have been separated because of our broken immigration system which continues to tear apart the very fabric of our country.

Countless families across the country need your help to encourage Congress to pass immigration reform before the end of this congressional cycle.

Join the national efforts to pass immigration reform now!

Veterans & Caregivers #VeteransDay2014 #ForLoveOfCountry

November is a month focused on giving thanks for our families, our friends, and all of life’s blessings. By no coincidence, it’s also designated National Caregivers Month and is a time when we celebrate the valor of our nation’s heroes on Veterans Day.

We would like to take this moment to express our union’s deepest gratitude to our veterans and their families for their bravery and the sacrifices they’ve made for all of us. We would also like to acknowledge and thank our members for their hard work and dedication to ensuring that hundreds of thousands of California seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities receive the quality care they need to live a life of dignity. The work that caregivers do is invaluable and deserves great praise, respect and recognition.

One ULTFatima-Gil-Veteran-Family-CaregiversCW member who encompasses all of what November represents is Santos Gil. An in-home  caregiver, Santos has cared for her daughter Fatima, an Army Veteran, for the past twenty years.

Diagnosed with a severe illness before being deployed to the Gulf War, Fatima’s situation was made even worse when the medication prescribed for her illness triggered chronic conditions including diabetes and thyroid problems.  However, under the loving care of her mother, Fatima is able to live a thriving life where she is active, engaged and surrounded by people who love and care for her deeply.

During this season of giving thanks, We ask that you join us in extending your appreciation to caregivers and veterans you know for the contributions they have made and continue to make to our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
