SEIU ULTCW Members Set New Course at Leadership Summit

MosaicMaking a commitment to create a dynamic force for California long term care workers, their families and those they provide care to, over 1500 people attended the SEIU ULTCW Leadership Summit at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles on November 22-23.

During the two-day event, members presented their own ideas and vision for the union, which were captured in a report called “Reflect, Rebuild, Renew“. The report is a product of the months-long process by the union’s MOVE Committee (Members of Vision Empowered). New ideas, discussions and consensus centered largely on building greater Member Strength, generating more Political Strength, creating growth through Organizing, and identifying more Education and Training opportunities and access.

Keynote speakers at the event included Co-Trustee Laphonza Butler, LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, SEIU President Andy Stern, SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger, SEIU Executive Vice-President Gerry Hudson, and Actor/Activist Danny Glover.

Among the several activities featured in the program was an interactive Exhibit area that included a giant postcard on Healthcare Reform, and large scale set of small group exercises wherein members were able to dig deeper into the Reflect Rebuild Renew report and their contribution in making it real.

Perhaps the most captivating moment was the creation and display of the Hopes and Dreams mosaic. Created by 2″ by 3″ cards on which members wrote their hopes as they related to the Reflect Rebuild Renew report, the 8-foot by 12-foot mosaic symbolizes the beauty of what’s possible when hope are dreams are united together.
